Timelapse of assembling juicer 2.0 🍋 I’ve added a lip to more easily hold it when pouring out the juice! Improvement?

It’s all about the layers for me. Layer, upon layer, upon layer. If you watch to the end, you’ll see just why all these layers equal pure magic. The finished piece is truly scrumptious. •

Details: I use a TON of wax on my surface treatments. A layer of wax is applied before carving, thus resisting the black slip I paint on in the beginning and wipe away. This wax burns off in the bisque fire. I then dip the piece in a base glaze (not shown) and proceed to apply layer upon layer of wax and glaze as shown in the video. I show a lot more of this detail in my stories over the course of a work cycle (from lump of clay to pulling it out of the kiln.) So follow along there if you want to see more.

My process for adorning this wheel thrown bowl with leaf sprigs from @sprigginawesomestamps (which should be available around the 15th 😉): I let the sprigs firm up to the point where I can touch them without marring the surface, but they’re still bendy. Then, I use a paint brush to apply a generous layer of thin clay slip to the backs. No need to score them as long as you apply the slip heavily and press all the sprig edges down gently, yet firmly. Next, I use the same slip brush to apply slip to the edges to fill in any cracks around the sprig and brush the entire surface of the sprig with thin slip to smooth out any finger prints or rough spots, leaving a nice smooth surface. 👍🏽

Shelter in place, nothing else to do but throwing more pots. Here is another roller texture lidded/covered jar. In-depth explanation on my YouTube for almost 50 minutes of demo. Hopefully I don’t make you bore while you’re in the same situation as a lot of people in California!

The Clay Lady’s Campus

These 2 are friends. I spent much of my childhood moving around, leaving good friends behind and struggling through the process of making new friendships. I always felt a bit different than everybody else. I especially found it hard to feel included amongst other artists. I still struggle with this and suspect many others do too. Four years ago I discovered @clayladycampus where my studio is located today. This place has shown me what inclusion means. It has given me the type of acceptance that allows me to express myself more authentically. The really wonderful thing about it all is that my friends aren’t just like me. We aren’t all the same age, gender or race. Their family structures are different than mine. Some of them are cat people. I’m team dog. 💙

Day 15, Self Care. How appropriate, friends. This video is a peek into yesterday, and me wrestling with 7 lbs of clay throwing a planter. I’ll be in the studio this week continuing to create pots that make me happy. 🌱
Michael and I will also be working towards listing new work online! With our physical retail shop closed for the foreseeable future, this is a time to find a fluid way of moving forward💫

I’m only a week into March Meet the Maker and I’m already sick of talking about myself 😅 Thank god today’s theme is ‘Love to make’!
.
.
It’s probably no surprise that Kurinuki is currently my favourite technique. It’s a Japanese method of hollowing out a single block of clay to reveal the form. In fact, kuri-nuki translates to “carving out”. .
.
My BFAHons was primarily sculpture and I find reductive working through the Kurinuki process very sculptural. It forces me to go slow which is quite calming, and I like that it creates results that surprise me. This video covers about 1 hr of work.
.
.
I taught myself this skill after doing some research online just last year, so my version is some kind of mutated adaptation of the original Japanese process that I’ve found works for my style (ie. it would be disrespectful to claim I do true ‘Japanese Kurinuki’). Next time I visit Japan I would love to take a traditional Kurinuki class!
