New mug experiment… that middle color didn’t turn out like I planned but I like the brilliance of the two greens on top and bottom! I have a bunch more to glaze so I’ll continue to experiment this coming week! 💖 #mugshot #glazeexperiment #coffeetime #lattemug #handmademug #glazechemistry #glazetest #espresso #seattlecoffee #methowvalley #twispwa (at Twisp, Washington)

I’m supposed to be going to the grocery store but I’m in the car staring at my new glaze test tiles that came out of the firing today. Can’t wait to put some of these new colors to work! It feels good to be home and feel the energy of my Chile experience pushing me to try new things! 💘 Ok now I have to go buy baby food and pill pockets for my dog who is sick! 😢🐶💗💊 #glazetests #glazetest #glazechemistry #testtiles #potterslife #brownclay #twispwa #twisp #methowvalley #ceramics (at Twisp, Washington)

Every January is all about testing and experimenting with new glazes and techniques… love how these test glazes came out in this morning’s firing! A lot of potential here! I did commit the cardinal sin of not fully labeling what I tested, so I will have to guess (bangs head against the wall) 🙈 #oops #whattheheckamilookingat #glazetests #glazechemistry #testtiles #ceramics #pottery #brownclay #chocolateclay #potterslife

Yesterday’s post showed how a glaze applies differently when you have different water content (different specific gravities).
🤓
This post shows the difference before and after flocculating a glaze with Epsom salts. Both of these samples have the exact same amount of water (Specific gravity = 1.48).
🤓
Before the Epsom salts are added (left tile) the glaze is milky thin, the particles move freely past one another and don’t stick well to the test tile.
🤓
When the glaze is flocculated with Epsom salts (right tile) the glaze is thicker in the bucket, the particles stick to each other and stick better to the test tile, giving a thicker layer.
🤓
The glaze also takes a bit longer to dry which allows for a smoother, even coat.
🤓
Flocculation and water content both affect how a glaze will apply. Every glaze will have different characteristics. It’s good to get to know how all your glazes work so you can make them work the way you want.

Here’s a hyperlapse video of a freshly dipped lichen glaze, drying over 3 minutes. It’s so cool to watch the cracks forming as the glaze shrinks upon drying.
.
This glaze contains 20% EPK and 20% magnesium carbonate, which are the 2 ingredients that cause the cracks to form. Both materials swell when combined with water and as the water is pulled out of the glaze and into the bisque, the glaze shrinks. Like a dried up mud puddle.
.
I wish I could video the firing process as well. Maybe one day technology will allow us to see inside our kilns as they’re firing.

Chloe, my awesome intern, is mixing a new larger batch of a newer pink glaze recipe today. The dense wildfire smoke and construction vibrations are getting to us but we’re trying to keep our spirits up by working on new recipes and experiments the last few weeks. I put plastic up on some of my windows to help keep some of the smoke from seeping in the studio, as it seems to be doing today. 😷😷😷. Might as well just keep our respirators on all day, even when we’re not mixing glazes 🙄😷🔥 #glazetest #glazechemistry #wildfires (at Twisp, Washington)

Gettin’ my glaze chemicals in bins and organized like a big girl! ?? So satisfying. #glazechemistry #glazechemicals #testtiles #ceramics #pottery (at Twispworks)
